Is it true that one human year is equal to seven dog years?

User Avatar

Not exactly. The first year of a dog’s life is generally closer to 15 human years, and size and breed factor into how quickly dogs age. Smaller dogs tend to live longer than larger breeds, and they don’t become “seniors” until around 10 years, but they may mature faster in the first few years of life. A bigger dog might age more slowly in the beginning but be nearing middle age at 5 years. Medium-sized dogs fall somewhere in the middle.

Kinda. Most people think that one dog year equals seven human years. But according to WebMD, your dog's real age is not that simple: Dogs mature more quickly than children in the first couple of years. So the first year of a dog's life is equal to about 15 human years, rather than seven.

If you own a dog, you've heard this rule: 1 year for Fido equals 7 years for you. Turns out, the math isn't that simple. Dogs mature more quickly than we do early on. So the first year of your fuzzy friend's life is equal to about 15 human years.

No one knows where the dog years rule came from, though virtually all dog owners know it. According to that popular myth, every year a dog spends on the planet is equivalent to seven years for a human. So if a dog lives to be 15 years old, she's actually 105 in human years.

Not actually. That is a common myth. The more a dog weighs the greater the number you multiply. The greatest you can get to is 10, which is for a Great Dane. However, multiplying 7 could go to medium-sized dogs.

According to what I have read: no. Because a dog at age 1 would have reached sexual maturity, unlike a 7 year old human. What I have read is that the first year of a dog is equal to 15 years for a human, and every subsequent year is 5 more. For example, an 8 year old dog would be equal to 15 + 7(5) human years which will give you roughly the age of a 50 year old human.

A puppy's first year isn't equal to 7 yrs, its the years after the 1st birthday you start counting and multiply it by 7 for example my dog is 16 yrs old minus the first year makes him 15yrs old x 7=105 yrs old in human years.

User Avatar

The rule that a dog year is equal to 7 human years is just a calculation of how long we live. Humans can live to around 100 years old where as dogs live to around 14 years old. This is all dependent on the dog, and is not always accurate.

Kinda. dogs can live about 15 years, and humans can live up too around 100.

100 divided by 15 is 6.7

so yeah. about 7. (but obviously it wont be exact, as not many dogs/people live the exact same amount of time)

Yes, seems like the correct answer dog's heart beats faster than humans, as well as they have more energy than humans. Many scientists have researched this subject saying that 1 year for a human is 7 years for a dog. I think it's a very interesting subject that needs more attention. Though I still wish that dogs could live as long as humans because they are such beautiful species. This may not be everyone's opinion/Answer but until people can prove me wrong I'm sticking to YES!!!
