How do mnemonic devices work?

User Avatar
They work by representing something you want to remember with something familiar - you can associate what you want to learn with something you already know. ...requiring us to learn or recall something else in order to bring the target to mind. It seems contradictory, but this works if done carefully. We create a chain or link between the something else and the target, and then the target comes easily to mind.

User Avatar
A mnemonic is a memory aid. Mnemonics use short familiar ideas (like a silly sentence, a song, or a set of short words) to help you remember longer ideas and terms. Stop, Drop, and Roll (instructions for what to do during a fire) is an example.

My very exquisite mother just served us nine pizzas. My very energetic mum swam under north pole. My very easy method just shows us nine planets. My very easy method just speeds up naming planets. My very easy methods just sums up nine planets. My very elderly mother just sat upon noddy's potty. My Very Eager Mother Just Sat Under Peter. There is also a song I know which goes like: Mercury is the first you see Venus second and the Earth makes 3 And there's Mars Mars the god of war Jupiter and Saturn make 1 2 more Uranus 7th planet Neptune completes the set 8 planets orbiting the sun What are their names? 1 by 1 ------------- The mnemonic was "My Very Educated Mother Just Showed Us Nine Planets" (MVEMJSUNP) : My = Mercury Very = Venus Educated =Earth Mother = Mars Just = Jupiter Showed = Saturn Us = Uranus Nine = Neptune Planets = Pluto (Another was "My Very Easy Method Just Speeds Up Naming Planets") Of course, students since 2006 must remember to exclude Pluto, as it is now a "dwarf planet" along with Ceres, Haumea, Makemake, and Eris. Just go through the sequence several times - you will learn it eventually. Saying it out loud as you repeat it several times also works, as it tends to help those that have trouble remembering things. When you are done saying the planets out loud over and over after a few times, try quizzing yourself by covering up the planets (after you've made a list of them in order, which you should try to make from memory), and then mentally quiz yourself, and see if you got it right. Do this several times until you get the order right three times in a row, and do this again a few hours later. For the record, there are now officially eight planets. Pluto has been demoted to a "dwarf planet".
